12 days of Doctor Who - #12 Doctor Merry Christmas!

First of all, Merry Christmas!

Peter Capaldi is the 12th incarnation of The  Doctor. He started  December 25, 2013 and is the current Doctor of the series. I am not caught up this far in the series so I haven't seen any episodes with this Doctor, but I'm excited to start.

And real quick before I  go back to the family and presents,
here is my Doctor Who wall with all the new faces...

I'm pretty sure I need a bigger wall now.

12 days of Doctor Who - #11 Doctor

Matt Smith played the Doctor from January 1, 2010 to  December 25, 2013. He was the youngest actor to be cast as the Doctor at age 26. This Doctor is famous for eating fish fingers and custard (Together, like dipping the fish stick in the custard), I made a variant of it once...

Tonight is Christmas Eve, I'll be off visiting family and friends before Santa comes tomorrow.

12 days of Doctor Who - #10 Doctor

From June 18, 2005 to  January 1, 2010 David Tennant played The Doctor and fulfilled a childhood dream. From an early age to told his parents to wanted to grow up to be an actor and play the Doctor one day.
He was my first doctor, having been introduced to the series with the episode 'Blink' and skipping to "Silence in the library' and  'Forest of the dead' (a two part episode). After that I was hooked.

12 days of Doctor Who - #9 Doctor

From March 26, 2005  to June 18 of the same year Christopher Eccleston portrayed The Doctor, making him number 9.  He was the first actor to play the role who was born after the series began and helped successfully relaunch the series, though he only stayed on for one season.

This drawing was done in 2013  (as well as doctors  #10 and #11), I was going to redo them but Christmas has caught up with me and I don't have the time. Both #9 and #10 have more of their torso showing that the rest of the Doctors, I think they look a little out of place on the Doctor wall now... I'll have to remedy that after the holidays.

12 days of Doctor Who - #8 Doctor

Paul McGann is the eighth Doctor. In yesterdays post I mentioned how the show was canceled in 1989, ending with the 7th Doctor. In 1996 they made a TV movie in an attempt to bring the series back and introduced the 8th Doctor. Alas it didn't take off and the 8th Doctor spent the least amount of time as the Doctor.

Only 4 more days till Christmas!

12 days of Doctor who - #7 Doctor

Sylvester McCoy played the seventh  Doctor from September 1987 to  December 1989 when the show was canceled.  This incarnation of the Doctor became one of the darkest and apparently convinced several of his enemies to commit suicide.
Not a very happy thought so close to Christmas... but it is what it is.

On a happy note, I have a Family Christmas Party to go to today :) I'm excited to see everyone and partake in the traditional white elephant gift exchange... I hope I don't end up with the cast of Aunt Jeanne's teeth this year.

12 days of Doctor Who - #6 Doctor

Today is the sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker, who was the Doctor from March 1984 to December 1986. He was known for being volatile and brightly colored, and I have to say I find his outfit interesting.

I've got my house all decorated (finally) and it's starting to really feel like Christmas.

12 Days of Doctor Who- #5 Doctor

The fifth Doctor was played by Peter Davison and was the Doctor from March 1981 to March 1984.
He was known as the pretty boy Doctor. I wonder why?

I can't believe Christmas is only a week away!

12 days of Doctor Who - #4 Doctor

The forth Doctor was played by Tom Baker. This Doctor was the longest running Doctor in the series  (172 episodes) and was most identified by his extra long scarf. He was the Doctor from June 1974 to March 1981.

Only 8 more days until Christmas!

12 Days of Doctor Who - #3 Doctor

The third Doctor was played by Jon Pertwee who's catch phrase was "Now listen to me!"
He was the Doctor from Jan 1970 to June 1974.

I really need to work of drawing hair... I am never happy with it.

Do you have your Christmas shopping done yet? I still have a few things to pick up and wrap but most of mine is done. And I think we are getting our Christmas tree today!

12 days of Doctor who - #2 Doctor

Doctor #2 is Patrick Troughton, who played the Doctor from Oct 1966 to June 1969. This Doctor was nicknamed the Cosmic Hobo  and I'm excited to watch some of his episodes.

I was introduced to Doctor Who with the reboot. The series was canceled in 1989 and started up again in 2005 with the ninth Doctor. I first watched the tenth Doctor and once I was hooked I went back to the ninth and watched until I was current with the series.
I have gone even further and found some episodes from the 60's, I love black and white shows, and I am slowly making my way through all the Doctors, but I have yet to see any with the second Doctor.

I've been running around selling Christmas Wreaths for some extra Christmas money and haven't gotten our tree yet! Though I did get our stockings put up over the weekend, the house still feels empty without that extra Christmas spirit.

12 days of Doctor Who - #1 Doctor

Christmas is almost here and I have decided to celebrate it with a Doctor Who count down. I'm not sure what started the whole 12 days of Christmas thing (I will be looking it up after this) but instead of a partridge in a pear tree we are going to have Doctor #1.
I'll spend the next 12 days drawing the incarnations of the Doctor from BBC's Doctor Who. If you haven't seen the show I suggest you do, it's quite addictive and wonderful.

Our first day of Christmas is William Hartnell who was the Doctor from Nov 1963 to Oct 1966.

And after looking it up, the 12 days of Christmas actually starts on Christmas and ends on Jan 6th... I'm still doing it my way, I hope you all enjoy!

29 faces September Challenge, faces #25 #26 #27 #28 #29 and a bonus #30!

Holy crap I did it!
I really didn't think I was going to make it this challenge.
I'm pretty happy with these next few faces, all were free hand with charcoal. They don't look as nice as my pencil work or something I map out first but I can tell that I'm improving.

Faces #25 and #26 the wolf-man and his girl

Faces #27, #28, #29 and bonus #30! They should he familiar faces :)

29faces September Challenge faces #16, #17, #18, #19, #20, #21, #22, #23, #24

Ok, I got my commission work done, which got me as far as face #24 (I actually forgot one and though I was only at #22, I was a little disappointed)

Face #16 Killian

Faces #17, #18, and #19 the whole family.

Faces #20, #21, #22 The whole family (I did this one first but I didn't like how her son turned out so I did the other family portrait as well)

Faces #23 and #24 Father and Son

Can I make it? 29faces September Challenge.

I have one day left to finish 9 faces ( I have faces #16, #17, #18 #19 & #20 done. I just need to upload the pictures to my computer). The last time I was on the wire to get faces done I  posted some pretty crummy sketches just to get all 29 done on time and you know what? I wasn't happy about finishing the challenge, I felt like I had cheated or that it wasn't really over with.
So tomorrow I am going to try to do 9 faces, and I'm not going to rush it, I will complete them, and if I can't make it, at least I can look back on some quality faces.
Wish me luck!

September 2014 face #14 and #15

One of my friends on facebook wanted a picture of herself done, I snooped on her facebook page and found the cutest picture of her and her son and had to draw them.  She loved how it turned out and has requested a few more, which will probably be my next few faces.

Face #14 and #15...

September 2014 Face #13 Katy Perry

I had another request, this time for Katy Perry. To say how Kylie is related to me is very long winded (think friend of a friend type  thing). Anyway, she's 5 and is in love with Katy Perry, she even went to the Katy Perry concert that was in Portland last week. She was all dressed up with fairy wings and got her hair spray painted blue, just like Katy Perry. She's stinking adorable.

Sorry for the fuzziness of the picture, I took it on my phone and sent to facebook before copying it to here. (maybe when I stop being lazy I will put a better picture up).

September 2014 Face #12... I think...

Home improvements have taken over my free time but at least I don't have a gaping hole in my living room wall anymore :)  I was able to carve out sometime tonight  and got a face done. Tomorrow I'm taking a well deserved break and hopefully will be able to catch up on my faces.

Face #12 was a request...a very insistent request from my facebook page.
John Wayne.

September 2014 faces #10 and #11

This weekend was super busy, and I didn't think I would get any faces done, but while at the Renaissance fair  on Sunday I was able to sketch two faces. I found a shady spot at one of the small stages and for 10 minutes I listened to a harpist and sketched.

The first face was just charcoal to paper, I couldn't see the harpists face, otherwise I would of sketched her. I couldn't blend every well with the charcoal pencil that I brought so I didn't do  much shading or detail.

One lady sat down kitty-corner from me and I was able to get her basic sketch... she moved before I could finish her.

And a picture from Sunday. It was near 100 degrees in the kings valley (It's actually named that, it's not just for the festival) and all of us had a blast despite the heat. And my feather costume held up nicely (and kept me cool compared to last years outfit) though I have some tweaking I want to do to it before next time.

September 2014 faces #8 and #9

Woot! Two more faces done, another couple, this time in charcoal.
I'm still behind, but I'm getting closer.

September 2014, Face #6 and #7

I found a little free time last night, and while I watched a movie, I also got faces #6 and #7 done.
These faces are personal, I had been trying to draw them for over three years. The guide photo is of my grandparents, just before my grandfather went into heart surgery, it turned out to be the last photo of them together.
I wanted to  draw it for his memorial, but couldn't bring myself to do it, his death was still too fresh.
So, almost four years later, here it is...

September 2014.....

Simply put, I am behind on faces. I am in the middle of installing flooring in the upstairs AND making 4 costumes for this weekends  Rennesance fairs. I'm a little swamped, but even though I'm behind, I have a plan, and I will finish these 29 faces within the time frame.

I hope everyone else is doing well with the challenge, when I find more time I plan on blog hopping and checking out everyone's progress!

September 2014, face #5

It's been a busy two days. I am remodeling the upstairs of my house and removing a fireplace in the downstairs (which will need a new wall put up before it rains), we also got an impromptu roommate last week when a friend lost his apartment, to say my house is a chaotic is an understatement. To top it all off , yesterday I found out I lost one of my jobs, the steady one that paid the rent, I have mixed feelings about it, I was talking with my business partner about  absolving that business at the end of the year, I just wasn't planning on it happening this soon....

My point in sharing isn't for sympathy, I know this is the flow of life, out with the old, in with the new. But I think it's the reason this next face turned out so well (he's my favorite so far this challenge). I've noticed that my best art comes out during times of heightened emotion, Happy, Sad, Stressed, Depressed. It doesn't matter what feeling it is, the excess emotions spills out into my art and makes something amazing (At least I notice a difference in quality).

See for yourself...

Face #5....
I could of done his hair better (hair seems to be my weakness, I just can't get any of it right), but I love his nose, eyes, and eyebrows.

The inspiration....

September 2014, Face #4

I didn't want to map out this face, I just wanted to put my pencil (charcoal) to paper and create something.
I started with her eyes and after the initial sketch I moved on to her nose and mouth. I added more detail as I went along, shading and  blending. She turned out pretty cool.

Face #4....

September 2014, Face #3

Face #3 frustrated me. I loved the photo I used as a guide, but early on I had skewed the face somehow, (proportions, angles, something was wrong in the beginning), but I just kept going with it, I was trying to make whatever I did work (which usually works out fine). There is a lot about this face that I like, but as a whole I am not happy with it, and decided to stop messing with it, because I was taking hours just touching up little areas. I started on face #4 instead and left this one as is.

Face #3....

September 2014 Face #2

This challenge you will see a lot of elderly people, I love drawing wrinkles for some reason, and absolutely love the character that they give a face.

The face....

Off to get more faces done, I hoping to get a few done a head of time so I have back up for a busy day.

September 2014 Face Challenge, Face #1

Welcome back, it's time for more faces!

I've been looking forward to this challenge all summer, a new job kept me busy in April/May and I wasn't able to participate in the hands challenge like I wanted to( I also stopped checking by the facebook page, and lost touch with what everyone was doing, yikes!). Things have calmed down a little on the home front and I decided I could take the plunge and work this challenge into my busy schedule.

Here we go. Face #1...

Happy Labor Day, I'm off to binge on classic horror movies and get more faces done :) (It's how I do things, movies and drawings go hand in hand for me).

Face #27, #28, and #29!!! I made it!

It is day 28, we are at the finish line. Another month of faces has gone by and I can hardly believe it. There where a few times this month that I thought I wouldn't make it, but here I am :)

Face #27 in pencil... I found a collection of Victorian hair styles and some of the women in the photos are just begging to be draw or painted... She is one of them (I liked her face more than her hair lol!).

Face #28 in pencil, was done in the car (parked). Her shadowing turned out amazing

Finally face #29!!!!! I love shadows and this photo was screaming out to me with all it's darkness...

Another challenge down! WHOOHOO pat yourself on the back, we made it!

I plan on doing 'Hands in April' next, I'm not sure if it's planned this year or not but I greatly enjoyed doing it last year. I'll see all of you in April!

Face #23, #24, #25, and #26

Again a day of trying to catch up. Two of the faces are from Christmas and were in my reserve stash to make sure I had enough to reach all 29!

Face #23, Lily in pencil...was going to be a Christmas present but looks nothing like her, I just couldn't get the shadowing right and it didn't do her justice (other than not looking like the intended child I love this drawing)

Face #24 Lily in Pencil, I was able to recover with this picture of lily (Note; it is not finished in this picture, I added a lot more detail work and shadowing, but I don't have a picture of the finished piece as I finished it the night before the Christmas party).

Face #25 in pencil, Freehand with only glancing at my guide as I drew... His mouth needs work, not enough shadowing now that I look at it on here.... but I love his eyes.

Face #26  in pencil... A different angle than usual, it would of worked better if I wasn't so buzzed on coffee and rushed through it.

Only one more day to go! I got to get back to drawing if I want to make it to the end!

Wednesday, February 26, 2014

Face #18 #19 #20 #21 and #22

I was going to try and get ahead on my faces so that over the weekend (when I work) I wouldn't have to worry about staying caught up... It was a nice thought, but it never happened and I found myself doodling at work while it was slow.

Face #18 in pencil

Face #19 in pencil, I was stopped partway through him and didn't feel like finishing...

Face #20  in pencil, looks nothing like the guide photo but I really like her.

Face #21 in charcoal, she was a quick sketch, took me less than ten minutes.... That's also probably why her nose is crooked...

Face #22 in pencil. I was trying for a new angle, of a down cast face.... Something about her chin doesn't work for me though....

Saturday, February 15, 2014

Faces #11, #12, #13, #14, #15, #16, and #17 I'm ahead!

After my last post I got stuck on a face, well two faces actually, my Valentines couple. I found a challenging guide picture and started mapping it out, trying to get all the proportions right.
When I started  actually drawing it and putting in details, something just wasn't working, I became obsessed and as a result fell behind on my faces.
I still do not like it, their faces at least have not turned out, but I decided I couldn't work on it anymore, nothing I did made it better and I'm sick of looking at it now lol.

Faces #11 and #12, unfinished in pencil..... I will not post the guide photo because it's that off and I'm unhappy with it, but they were faces made in February so they count...

I was a bit discouraged after  I decided to stop mucking with  faces #11 and #12, not only because I was not satisfied with how they turned out, but also because I was now behind on faces. I decided I wasn't going to map out as detailed of faces, like I had before, and focus on letting my hand and eye create things.

Face #13, in Charcoal, she was lightly mapped out, I at least drew a 'T' to figure out the center line and where her eyes were going.

Face #14 in Charcoal. No mapping, just glancing at the guide photo and letting my hand to the rest.
I really like him, he's even cooler looking in person.

Face #15 was done without a guide photo, I just started drawing, its a lot better than my previous work without a guide, I guess that means I'm improving...

Face #16, I started him and decided I didn't like where he was going and to start again, but he's still a full face, so he counts in my book.

Face #17, in Charcoal, He turned out a lot better than face #16 and I really liked this angle. I will do this one again in the future, except I will map it out a bit so it actually looks like the guide photo (it's Willem Dafoe)

This weekend isn't super busy for me, so I should be able to take advantage of the free time and get some more faces done... next week is going to be busy....
